Defqon.1, one of the biggest hard dance festivals in the world, held in Biddinghuizen in the Netherlands, has cancelled the entire remainder of its weekend, effective from Friday 26 June 2026, with the grounds closing their gates. It is news that has shaken hard dance fans around the world.
The decision came after the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, KNMI, issued a Code Red warning for extreme heat lasting at least the next 24 hours.

What makes this so significant is that it is the first time the Netherlands has ever issued its highest-level warning because of high temperatures, with forecasts pointing to 36 to 39 degrees and some spots possibly hitting 40. KNMI reserves Code Red for weather that can cause serious danger, including risks to public health, transport and large outdoor events, so organisers were forced to cancel together with the authorities.
What makes the situation harder is that, when the announcement came, tens of thousands of Weekend Warriors were already staying on the camping grounds, many having travelled far and prepared for months. Q-dance had first tried to reduce risk by cancelling Friday and Saturday day tickets to lower capacity, before ultimately calling off the whole weekend.
On Friday, the camping grounds and part of the festival grounds stay open, with no musical programming but with essential facilities available, giving everyone time to arrange a safe journey home.
Organisers have confirmed that all tickets for the 2026 edition will be refunded, handled through official channels, with details on additional compensation to follow after the weekend once the situation has been assessed. Anyone with questions can check the official FAQ at defqon1.com.
In their statement, organisers said this was not the journey they had imagined, but that their duty is to keep everyone safe. The episode is a reminder of a new challenge facing outdoor festivals, as extreme weather becomes something every organiser now has to plan for.
