FIFA Just Announced the First Ever World Cup Final Halftime Show and the Lineup Is Massive

History is being made on July 19, 2026.

FIFA and Global Citizen officially announced on May 14, 2026 that the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will feature a halftime show for the first time ever in the tournament's history. Madonna, BTS, and Shakira will perform during the break, making this one of the most significant music moments of the decade.

The announcement was made through a social media video featuring Coldplay's Chris Martin alongside Sesame Street characters including Elmo and Cookie Monster, as well as Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and other Muppets. Martin even FaceTimes BTS in the video. He said of the show: "This is not about me. It's about all of us. It's about being together."

The halftime show is expected to run approximately 11 minutes

Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

The FIFA World Cup final is the most watched single sporting event on the planet. The 2022 final drew over 1.5 billion viewers worldwide. Adding a halftime show to that broadcast does not just create a music moment. It creates a moment that will be seen by more people simultaneously than almost anything else in entertainment history.

For context, the Super Bowl Halftime Show has been running since 1967 and has become arguably the most coveted performance slot in all of music. FIFA is now building something equivalent for the world's sport.

Chris Martin curated the lineup in his role with Global Citizen, the same organization he worked with to select J Balvin, Doja Cat, and Tems for the FIFA Club World Cup halftime show in 2025.

Why These Three Artists

Shakira has a direct and deeply emotional relationship with the World Cup. She performed Waka Waka at the 2010 tournament in South Africa and La La La in 2014 in Brazil. She is also the artist behind Dai Dai, the official 2026 World Cup anthem recorded with Burna Boy. Her presence on this stage carries more weight than almost any other artist could.

BTS as one of three headliners confirms what the music industry has been saying for years: K-pop is no longer a niche genre. It is mainstream global music, and putting BTS on the World Cup final stage in front of 1.5 billion viewers is the clearest possible statement of that fact.

Madonna headlined the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show and co-headlined with Jennifer Lopez in 2020. She is one of the few artists whose cultural weight matches the scale of a World Cup final stage.

The Bigger Trend

This is not happening in isolation. The NCAA Basketball Final Four in April 2026 featured a bridge show from The Chainsmokers. Music is becoming a core part of live sports broadcasting beyond just the Super Bowl, and FIFA's decision to join that movement with the biggest possible lineup signals that the sports-music crossover is now a permanent feature of major global events.

If the World Cup halftime show delivers, UEFA Champions League finals, Copa America, and other major tournaments will almost certainly follow.

What to Know About World Cup 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the first time the US has hosted the tournament since 1994. The final and halftime show take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium. US viewers can watch on Fox in English and Telemundo in Spanish. Broadcasting arrangements for Thailand have not yet been confirmed.

The halftime show will also raise funds for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, supporting access to quality education and football for children worldwide.
