Montreal, Canada's second-largest city, is planning to create a 24-hour entertainment district! According to an announcement by Luc Rabouin, chair of the city's executive committee, the area will be located near the downtown core and existing regulations will be unveiled in early 2024, including changes to noise regulations.
Although the exact location has not yet been specified, several bars around St-Laurent Boulevard were given permission to serve alcohol all night in February 2023, with some operating until 8:00 AM. These pilot projects were part of a two-year effort to find the most effective and least disruptive way to extend nightlife hours.
The plan to create a 24-hour entertainment district in Montreal is "aimed at making nearby neighborhoods more welcoming to cultural and economic activities at night, while also taking measures to protect quality of life."
The plan is expected to be announced officially this month and implemented in the Canadian spring.
Montreal is not the only city considering a 24-hour entertainment district. In 2021, New York City proposed creating several 24-hour nightlife districts, inspired by policies in European cities like Berlin and Amsterdam.
In New York City, 24-hour nightlife events are currently limited to Saturdays and Sundays, but the city has begun hosting "Party Nonstop Every Weekend" events in early 2024.
What do you think about the idea of 24-hour entertainment districts? Could it work in Thailand?
