Tomorrowland Thailand has now been pulled into the political spotlight after the Thai government raised questions over the project’s funding transparency.
On November 9, government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat addressed the media following accusations that the administration had favored private businesses by using state funds to host the MotoGP event in Buriram. He clarified that the arrangement was a direct partnership between the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and the official race rights holder, with Chang International Circuit having provided its venue free of charge for the past seven years, without private intermediaries.
However, during his statement, Siripong also referred to another high-profile international project currently drawing global attention, Tomorrowland Thailand. He cited the festival as an example of “state-funded support for private event organizers,” noting that the structure of this project was entirely different from that of MotoGP.
“The MotoGP model is a collaboration contract directly between the Sports Authority of Thailand and the rights owner. It’s not a case where the government allocates money to pay private companies to host the event. That differs from the previous government’s model, such as the Tomorrowlandproject, where the state subsidized a private company to organize the event and allowed that company to generate its own profit.
In contrast, for MotoGP, if revenue exceeds expenses, the surplus must be returned to the state. Therefore, I would encourage the Pheu Thai Party spokesperson and Mr. Tawee to check whether the company responsible for organizing Tomorrowland has the same major shareholders as the one that handled the Songkran Festival under the previous government.”
Siripong further noted that the company granted rights to organize Tomorrowland may have connections to the same private group behind the Songkran Festival under the former administration, a matter the current government says it intends to investigate.
Although Tomorrowland Thailand’s organizers have not yet issued an official response, the spokesman’s remarks have already sent shockwaves through Thailand’s live event industry. Tomorrowland has been viewed as a milestone project for the country’s electronic music scene, following year-long rumors that the world-famous Belgian festival was preparing its first-ever edition in Pattaya.
