Why Mysteryland Is Skipping 2026 and What’s Coming Next

Mysteryland, one of the longest-running electronic music festivals in the world, has officially confirmed it will not host an edition in 2026. Organizers ID&T announced the decision in July 2025, calling it a temporary break to reset, reflect, and evolve. The move ends more than a decade of continuous editions at its current home in Haarlemmermeer, but it is not the end of the festival. A full return is already confirmed for 2027.

The main reason behind the hiatus is the rising cost of festival production. Since the pandemic, costs for infrastructure, logistics, staffing, artist bookings, and even basic materials have increased significantly. Organizers revealed that continuing under the current format was no longer sustainable. Rather than reduce quality or raise ticket prices beyond reach, they chose to pause and restructure. The Dutch festival industry has been facing similar pressure across the board, with dozens of smaller events canceled in 2024 and 2025. Additional challenges, such as tax changes and inflation, have only made things harder.

Audience expectations are also evolving. Festivalgoers are looking for fresh experiences, and Mysteryland’s team believes the break will give them time to develop something new. According to official statements, the goal is to rethink the overall concept, from stage design and curation to how the festival connects with a new generation of ravers. A new creative team is already being assembled to lead the reimagining process.

The 2025 edition is being promoted as the final chapter of the current format, with organizers encouraging fans to make the most of what will be the last Mysteryland for a while. Weekend passes sold out quickly following the announcement, and the event is expected to draw over 100,000 people for one last full-scale celebration before the break.

This is not the first time Mysteryland has gone quiet. It skipped 1995 due to financial issues and was forced to cancel in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. In every case, the festival returned. This time, the break is not due to crisis but to ensure the future of the brand. ID&T emphasized that this is a proactive move, not one dictated by investors or outside pressure. They have committed to bringing the festival back to its usual location in 2027, with a new vision that reflects the needs of both the industry and the fans.

Reaction across the EDM community has been mixed but mostly understanding. Some longtime attendees expressed disappointment, while others welcomed the idea of a fresh start. With other major festivals like Glastonbury also taking a break in 2026, many see this as part of a broader trend where longevity means knowing when to pause. Locally, the economic impact of the hiatus will be felt, but local officials and businesses appear to be taking the long view. Mysteryland contributes significantly to regional tourism, and its return is expected to bring that momentum back.

Mysteryland’s 2026 break may feel like the end of an era, but all signs point to a calculated reset aimed at long-term survival. With more than 30 years of history behind it, the festival is preparing to reintroduce itself to the world. The journey isn’t over. Mysteryland will return in 2027 with a new chapter built on everything it’s learned.
