Good news for anyone who loves nightlife in Thailand, but do not celebrate just yet.
Thailand's Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee has approved in principle a proposal to allow 24-hour alcohol sales in designated areas within the Eastern Economic Corridor, or EEC, following a meeting chaired by Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat on April 17.
The two types of venues covered under the proposal are event and exhibition areas, and restaurants within the EEC zone. All venues would still be required to comply with all existing laws.
Not Effective Yet
The approval in principle does not mean alcohol can start flowing around the clock immediately. The next step is a public consultation process to gather feedback from all stakeholders, after which the measure must be issued as a royal decree and published in the Royal Gazette. The full legal process is expected to take around 30 days plus a further 30 days and is anticipated to be completed by the end of May 2026.
Why Now?
The timing is not accidental. Thailand already relaxed alcohol sales restrictions during the 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM window, and a 90-day review covering December 2025 through March 2026 found no increase in traffic accidents during that period, even during the extended sales hours between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM. That data gave the committee enough confidence to move forward with the broader proposal.
The measure is aimed at supporting the Eastern Aviation City and enhancing its attractiveness to investors, positioning the zone as one with round-the-clock economic activity similar to an international airport model.
What This Means for Nightlife
If the proposal clears the public hearing and is formally enacted, the EEC would become the first area in Thailand where alcohol can legally be sold 24 hours a day. That is a significant shift for a country that has historically had some of the stricter alcohol sale restrictions in Southeast Asia.
For the nightlife and entertainment industry, particularly in areas like Pattaya which falls within the EEC zone and is set to host Tomorrowland Thailand in December 2026, this could open the door to a new era of event and venue operations.
The question now is whether the public hearing process runs smoothly and whether the measure makes it all the way into law before the end of May as expected. Watch this space.
